Join us for the December AMASIAN Learning Series featuring a Know Your Rights Workshop, a one-hour webinar designed for immigrant community members and allies who want to be informed, prepared, and proactive when facing encounters with ICE or law enforcement.

This workshop will be led by Iris Christenson, a retired attorney and dedicated volunteer with the Catholic Multicultural Center’s Immigration Program (CMC) and VOCES de la Frontera. Iris has facilitated numerous Know Your Rights presentations for community and faith-based organizations, helping individuals and families understand and assert their legal rights. She also assists families in completing Power of Attorney documents and trains volunteers to do the same.

What You’ll Learn

The workshop is divided into two key sections:

  1. Knowing and Exercising Your Rights
Learn about the fundamental rights of all U.S. residents—citizens and non-citizens alike—and how to safely and effectively exercise those rights during encounters with ICE or the police, whether at home, at work, or on the road. The session will also explain how allies can support immigrants by documenting encounters and contacting the VOCES hotline.

  2. Planning for Family Preparedness
Discover how to create a family plan in case a loved one is arrested, detained, or deported. Iris will explain two essential Power of Attorney documents:

    • Financial Power of Attorney: Allows a trusted agent to manage financial matters such as paying bills or collecting paychecks.

    • Childcare Power of Attorney: Authorizes a trusted person to make decisions for children to prevent them from entering social services custody.

Throughout the session, participants will have opportunities to ask questions. Copies of the presentation will be available upon request.

Join us to gain practical knowledge and tools to protect your rights and strengthen your community through preparedness and solidarity.
